On some engines, a retune process does not create the same results as a good standard vehicle, which then creates the need for a power-up conversion, which usually involves a larger capacity exhaust system, a moderate boost increase, and a major tune-up to the engines. This process will normally give a 20% to 40% increase in power and torque at the drive wheels. In vehicles with a 5-speed manual transmission, a 20% increase in torque will allow 1 gear taller to be used and 2 gears taller if a 40% gain was created.
